Poker is a card game where players bet against each other. The objective is to earn the most money by having the best hand. There are several variants of the game, but most involve the use of a deck of cards and a central pot.

The game begins with a deal, in which all players are dealt cards. A number of betting rounds may follow, during which players can bet, raise, or fold their hands.

In each betting round, the player to the left of the dealer must place in the pot the number of chips (representing money) required by the rules of the variant. Each player in turn after that must also place the amount of chips required by the rules to make his total contribution to the pot at least equal to that of the player to his left.

Typically, the highest-ranked hand is awarded the pot. However, there are variations in which the highest and lowest-ranked hands divide the pot, sometimes called high low split games.

Strategy

The best strategy in poker involves a combination of deception, fast play and solid betting. Deception involves betting strongly on a weak hand, which is designed to induce opponents to fold superior hands. Slow playing is similar but involves betting less aggressively with a strong hand, attempting to induce opponents to call instead of raise.
